Scientists successfully control malaria mosquitoes in large cage studies

Scientists have successfully carried out studies in large cages mimicking natural conditions, demonstrating that gene drive can control malaria mosquito populations in laboratory settings. The outcomes of the research were recently published in the journal Nature Communications.

This is the first time a gene drive has been shown to suppress the mosquitoes’ population under these conditions over a long timescale. Large cage studies are recommended to evaluate gene drive mosquitoes in a physically contained laboratory before any small-scale open-field evaluation can be proposed and evaluated by national regulatory authorities.
