Held every four years, this global gathering will bring together nature conservation experts, leaders and decision-makers from various parts of the world to set priorities for nature conservation and drive sustainable development action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the topics under discussion will be synthetic biology, a groundbreaking field with great potential to contribute to conservation efforts. Recognizing its relevance for nature conservation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (<a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IUCN<\/a>) has been developing a relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/our-work\/informing-policy\/setting-conservation-priorities\/synthetic-biology-and-nature-conservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policy<\/a>, which is currently under discussion in view of adoption at this year\u2019s World Conservation Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"wpex-responsive-media\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IUCN Congress 2025: The countdown begins\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7BxO051ppls?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c4e27c94668473c8e8ad9993075fa123\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><em>Scientists, policy experts, business leaders and professionals from around the globe will convene in Abu Dhabi to share their experience, innovation and latest research.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across ecosystems, biodiversity is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/global-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declining at an alarming rate<\/a>. Nearly one in four species of animal and plant groups are threatened, suggesting that nearly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/news\/ipbes-global-assessment-summary-policymakers-pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one million<\/a>&nbsp;species are&nbsp;already facing extinction. Many could disappear within decades, unless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2019\/05\/nature-decline-unprecedented-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transformative action<\/a> is taken. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biodiversity crisis is being spurred by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/news\/Media-Release-Global-Assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five main drivers<\/a>: invasive species, changes in land and sea use, exploitation of natural resources, global heating, and pollution. These challenges are often interconnected and pose a serious threat not only to ecosystems but also to human health. For example, climate change can facilitate the establishment and spread of invasive species. In turn, invasive species can reduce ecosystems\u2019 resilience to climate change by disrupting natural environments. Climate change can also create favorable conditions for the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue. Land use \u2013 particularly deforestation \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/pages\/disease-and-deforestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can bring humans into closer contact with zoonotic diseases<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After decades of conservation efforts, the world stands at a critical juncture. Bold, transformative change is needed to secure a sustainable future for both nature and humanity.&nbsp;While existing conservation tools have delivered many successes, they are not enough to match the pace and scale of the ongoing biodiversity crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_297041278.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3834\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_297041278.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_297041278-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_297041278-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_297041278-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e455c723df7d7ee8d8039be1ab0b658f\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><em>On Floreana Island in the Gal\u00e1pagos Archipelago, a variety of native species, such as the Critically Endangered Floreana Mockingbird, are threatened by invasive species such as rats. <\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Synthetic biology is an innovative field with great promise for advancing nature conservation, offering new tools to address biodiversity loss and restore ecosystems. New approaches derived from synthetic biology are being explored for their potential to help complement existing conservation efforts and offer scalable, targeted and cost-effective solutions to complex challenges. Synthetic alternatives to horseshoe crab blood are for example <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosbiology\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pbio.2006607\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">being explored<\/a> to help reduce reliance on wild horseshoe crab populations, in perilous decline due to overharvesting, in part for medical safety testing. Genetic tools could be <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0169534721003384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leveraged<\/a> to protect endangered species \u2013 such as critically threatened amphibians \u2013 from devastating diseases. Gene drive technologies are being investigated as a potential tool to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandconservation.org\/island-communities-threatened-by-invasive-rodents-have-potential-new-tool-to-consider-for-conservation-toolbox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">control invasive rodent populations<\/a> on islands. To reduce coral reef degradation due to climate change, scientists are also researching the possibility of modifying coral genomes to <a href=\"https:\/\/research.csiro.au\/synthetic-biology-fsp\/scientists-successfully-develop-heat-resistant-coral-to-fight-bleachin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">better withstand rising ocean temperatures<\/a>, acidification, and pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_1124551927.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_1124551927.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_1124551927-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AdobeStock_1124551927-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-72bc4437b19a687f048e5451f468ca9c\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><em>Staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) has been listed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/es\/species\/133381\/165860142\">Critically Endangered<\/a> by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 2006.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the lead-up to this year\u2019s World Conservation Congress, we will be highlighting a series of case studies exploring complex conservation challenges and innovative strategies that could help address them. As ecosystems face mounting pressures, the conservation toolbox must evolve.
