This year\u2019s theme: <a href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/r03\/___https:\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/world-ntd-day\/2025\/key-messages___.YXYyYzplbWVyZ2luZ2FnOmE6bzo0MDBhMDcwMTM5MDhlNDlkNjlmZTA2YmZkOGNjNDI0MTo3Ojk2NTc6MmZhMTI2MDE0MDAwYWFmNzQxNjkxM2QyNzhiYjIyYjA3NzU2YmM3MDhjYmE2OGU5NTk3N2Y1NmJlNWVhOGMwZTpwOlQ6Rg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unite. Act. Eliminate.<\/a> urges leaders and communities to \u201cunite, act and eliminate NTDs by making bold, sustainable investments to free the estimated 1.5 billion people, in the world\u2019s most vulnerable communities, from a vicious cycle of disease and poverty\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NTDs are not merely a public health challenge, they are also a stark indicator of social inequities, disproportionately affecting marginalized populations with limited access to healthcare, sanitation, and education. Among NTDs, vector-borne diseases pose a unique challenge, due to their complex epidemiology and the difficulties involved in controlling insect vectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1620\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aedes-aegypti-CC-1620x1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aedes-aegypti-CC-1620x1080.jpg 1620w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aedes-aegypti-CC-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aedes-aegypti-CC-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aedes-aegypti-CC-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aedes-aegypti-CC-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/aedes-aegypti-CC.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1620px) 100vw, 1620px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e44a7ad27bc84dbc70d7c08c961d1cfe\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><em><em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquito<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dengue, a neglected tropical disease transmitted primarily by <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquitoes, has emerged as a significant global health concern in recent years. In 2024, dengue transmission reached <a href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/r03\/___https:\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(24)01542-3\/fulltext___.YXYyYzplbWVyZ2luZ2FnOmE6bzo0MDBhMDcwMTM5MDhlNDlkNjlmZTA2YmZkOGNjNDI0MTo3OmRhMDQ6ZTcwMTVlZWJlYjE3NjAyMTc3ZjQ5MmViN2VmOGIzZGVlMDZkNzdkN2Y4MGY1NTQyMWQ4OGJkYjI4OGY0NmFjZDpwOlQ6Rg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unprecedented levels<\/a>, with over 10 million cases reported worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research surrounding the use of gene drive technology as a tool to control mosquitoes that are vectors of disease has produced promising results. However, research on gene drive technology in the <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquito \u2013 which is also known for transmitting viruses such as Zika, yellow fever and chikungunya \u2013 remains limited, with only a few studies exploring its potential and challenges. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/r03\/___https:\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10340-024-01864-0___.YXYyYzplbWVyZ2luZ2FnOmE6bzo0MDBhMDcwMTM5MDhlNDlkNjlmZTA2YmZkOGNjNDI0MTo3OjUwZTQ6NDM2M2M3M2U5Yzk0Mzg4NjUwNjAxYzlmOGYzZDM1YmExZGU4NWYyOWY1NjQzMzEwMDMwZjNjZGIwNTIyZTZjZDpwOlQ6Rg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>, we evaluated two gene drive constructs and investigated their efficiency in spreading specific genetic traits through <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquito populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1228\" height=\"704\" src=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/resWeixin-Image_20250128003229.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/resWeixin-Image_20250128003229.jpg 1228w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/resWeixin-Image_20250128003229-768x440.jpg 768w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/resWeixin-Image_20250128003229-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1228px) 100vw, 1228px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bd75c7f20acafda04701beb595032728\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><em>Jackson Champer, Xiaozhen Yang and Xuejiao Xu with the Champer Lab\u2019s team at Peking University. Photograph: Champer Lab<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our study demonstrated the ability of one of these drives to achieve super-Mendelian inheritance, exhibiting the potential of spreading desired genetic traits in populations of these mosquitoes. The study thoroughly assessed gene drive and gene editing efficiency, as well as resistance allele formation, providing valuable data for further improving the gene drive performance. Improving drive efficiency and addressing potential resistance formation will be key to creating successful gene drives that can spread effectively and safely through a population of <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquitoes. Overall, the study highlights the potential of gene drive technology as a tool to control <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquitoes, as well as the importance of continued research and innovation to further refine the technology and explore strategies to make it more efficient. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As highlighted by this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/r03\/___https:\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/world-ntd-day\/2025\/key-messages___.YXYyYzplbWVyZ2luZ2FnOmE6bzo0MDBhMDcwMTM5MDhlNDlkNjlmZTA2YmZkOGNjNDI0MTo3Ojk2NTc6MmZhMTI2MDE0MDAwYWFmNzQxNjkxM2QyNzhiYjIyYjA3NzU2YmM3MDhjYmE2OGU5NTk3N2Y1NmJlNWVhOGMwZTpwOlQ6Rg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call to action<\/a>, achieving the targets of the <a href=\"https:\/\/url.avanan.click\/v2\/r03\/___https:\/www.who.int\/teams\/control-of-neglected-tropical-diseases\/ending-ntds-together-towards-2030\/targets___.YXYyYzplbWVyZ2luZ2FnOmE6bzo0MDBhMDcwMTM5MDhlNDlkNjlmZTA2YmZkOGNjNDI0MTo3OjJmZTU6NzAzNTBiNWYyMTZjOGNlNmNmYmNmYTY1MjliMjIwNjkxMjI3YTAxYzlkMTAxNmI5NzcyYTg5MWU5MTc5ZGY0NDpwOlQ6Rg#:~:text=The%20road%20map%20sets%20out%20global%20targets%20to,by%20the%20road%20map%3A%20overarching%2C%20cross-cutting%20and%20disease-specific.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WHO 2030 NTD road map<\/a> will require accelerating the research and development of new and improved tools to fight neglected tropical diseases, such as dengue.
