Photograph: ACEME<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7f281e5d97f685d907b7552143f1fb52\"><strong>Research and publication highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2024 saw the publication of several scientific papers reflecting significant progress in the field of gene drive research. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/biology\/people\/luke-alphey\/#research-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alphey Lab<\/a> de l\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of York<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/gene-drive-systems-to-control-aedes-aegypti-mosquitoes-make-headway\/\">published research<\/a> showing that split-drive systems can effectively propagate in caged mosquito populations of <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquitoes \u2013 which are vectors of several diseases, including dengue \u2013 \u00a0indicating a promising advancement towards more effective measures to fight this vector. <a href=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Target Malaria<\/a>, Transmission Zero, the University of California Malaria Initiative (<a href=\"https:\/\/stopmalaria.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UCMI<\/a>) and colleagues co-authored a <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/considerations-for-field-evaluations-of-gene-drive-mosquitoes-for-malaria-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaborative paper<\/a>, detailing a potential process for conducting field evaluations of gene drive technologies for malaria control. Photograph: LSTM<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/innovations-in-malaria-control-investigating-the-anopheles-funestus-mosquito\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ongoing work<\/a> by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lstmed.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LSTM<\/a>) is expanding our understanding of <em>Anopheles funestus<\/em>, a historically understudied but crucial malaria vector in Sub-Saharan Africa. By refining CRISPR-based gene editing tools, LSTM researchers were the first to develop a technology that allows the introduction of precise genetic modifications in&nbsp;<em>An. funestus<\/em>&nbsp;mosquitoes, opening opportunities for advancing the development of new tools to reduce malaria transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2eb0c87cc4650f66cfce7a6a499f09a3\"><strong>Exploring best practices in stakeholder and community engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stakeholder and community engagement are essential components of responsible gene drive research. In 2024, Network members continued sharing best practices in the field and lessons learnt through a selection of publications. In January, Target Malaria released a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/stakeholder-engagement-in-the-development-of-genetically-modified-mosquitoes-for-malaria-control-in-west-africa-lessons-learned-from-10-years-of-target-malaria-s-work-in-mali\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publication<\/a>\u00a0assessing 10 years of stakeholder engagement to identify good practices that can inform future engagement work on gene drive research in West Africa. In February, the Institute on Ethics &amp; Policy for Innovation (<a href=\"https:\/\/iepi.mcmaster.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IEPI<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/taking-stock-is-gene-drive-research-delivering-on-its-principles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">examined<\/a> the progress made in adhering to the Principles of Gene Drive Research, as outlined in the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASEM<\/a>)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/23405\/gene-drives-on-the-horizon-advancing-science-navigating-uncertainty-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gene Drives on the Horizon (2016)<\/a> report. IEPI\u2019s findings showed significant alignment with the goals and spirit of the Principles within the gene drive research community, from advancing quality science to engaging thoughtfully with affected communities, stakeholders, and publics. In June, UCMI published a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/a-close-look-at-ucmis-engagement-program-over-the-last-five-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper<\/a> detailing their engagement approach in S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe (STP) over the past five years. In November, another <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12936-024-05160-1?utm_source=rct_congratemailt&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=oa_20241126&amp;utm_content=10.1186%2Fs12936-024-05160-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publication<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Target Malaria<\/a> delved into how the project worked to develop a community agreement model for potential releases of non gene drive genetically modified fertile mosquitoes, contributing to the ongoing dialogue on best practices for building legitimacy in the design of community agreement models for genetic approaches to vector control.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b25ba7a1a1fffd4d0129623d9f952133\"><strong>Key moments for biodiversity conservation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the field of biodiversity conservation, members marked key international occasions throughout the year by highlighting ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity. For Invasive Species Awareness Week, Island Conservation <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/invasive-species-awareness-week-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highlighted<\/a> the work they are doing to remove invasive species from islands. For World Wildlife Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/conservationxlabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Conservation X Labs<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/world-wildlife-day-connecting-people-and-planet-through-digital-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shared<\/a> how they are harnessing digital innovations to address the escalating crisis of biodiversity loss.&nbsp; For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/biodiversity-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Day for Biological Diversity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandconservation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Island Conservation<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/international-biodiversity-day-harnessing-innovation-to-reverse-biodiversity-loss\/\">highlighted<\/a> the importance of leveraging research and innovation to address conservation challenges, and how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandconservation.org\/island-communities-threatened-by-invasive-rodents-have-potential-new-tool-to-consider-for-conservation-toolbox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gene drive technologies<\/a>&nbsp;are being explored as a tool to tackle invasive rodent populations on islands. To mark World Nature Conservation Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/reviverestore.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Revive &amp; Restore<\/a> spoke about the <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/world-nature-conservation-day-innovations-for-coral-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">potential of harnessing innovations for coral conservation<\/a>, including through the use of biotechnology and genetic rescue tools. Several campaigns were launched throughout the year to raise awareness of global health and conservation challenges and ongoing research to address these. To celebrate <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/world-malaria-day-innovating-for-health-equity-gender-and-human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Malaria Day<\/a>, we highlighted the profiles of researchers working on innovative approaches to accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world. The Network also marked <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/world-mosquito-day-fighting-the-spread-of-aedes-mosquitoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Mosquito Day<\/a> by launching a campaign featuring facts about mosquito-borne diseases, the impact of climate change on disease transmission and ongoing efforts to fight the world\u2019s deadliest creature. For <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/international-biodiversity-day-leveraging-innovation-to-be-part-of-the-plan-for-nature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Day for Biological Diversity<\/a>, we showcased the profiles of researchers and conservation experts, and their work to build back biodiversity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"wpex-responsive-media\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How can gene drive technologies promote health equity?\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-9jaeDYOfCQ?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-be81051723e92acdc3583bf23a3b8cac\"><strong>Events, conferences and trainings &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several international conferences and meetings were held throughout the year. The Transmission Zero team <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/vector-kolymbari-meeting-shaping-the-future-of-vector-control\/\">participated<\/a> in this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vectorkolymbarimeeting.com\/\">Vector Kolymbari Meeting<\/a>, an international conference that brings together members of the vector biology community. The Network and Target Malaria co-organized a <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/scaling-up-innovations-for-mosquito-borne-disease-control\/\">symposium<\/a> on scaling up innovations for mosquito-borne disease control at the 21st International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/ictmm2024.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ICTMM 2024<\/a>). The Network also organized a <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/how-could-genetic-approaches-be-integrated-in-the-malaria-toolkit\/\">symposium<\/a> on the margins of the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (<a href=\"https:\/\/themimsociety.org\/\">MIM Society<\/a>)\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mimafrica.rw\/\">8th Pan-African Malaria Conference<\/a>&nbsp;held in Kigali, Rwanda. The event explored how novel genetic approaches could be integrated into the malaria toolkit and contribute to end malaria. &nbsp;Network members also <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/eploring-the-value-of-stakeholder-engagement-for-gene-drive-research\/\">took part<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grc.org\/genetic-biocontrol-conference\/2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genetic Biocontrol Gordon Research Conference: Enhancing Public Health, Food Security and Biodiversity<\/a>&nbsp;in Barcelona, Spain to share their knowledge, exchange lessons learned, and discuss best practices in the field of genetic biocontrol. Amidst growing concerns about the adverse effects of climate change on human health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malarianomore.org\/\">Malaria No More<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/forecasting-healthy-futures-summit-spotlight-on-climate-sensitive-diseases\/\">Forecasting Healthy Futures Summit<\/a> convened leaders from around the world in Baku. The courses brought together science professionals from different African countries, providing opportunities for knowledge exchange, skill development and networking. In November, Prof. Tony Nolan, LSTM, presented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/could-we-eradicate-anopheles-stephensi-in-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cRAFT TechTalk: Could we eradicate <em>Anopheles stephensi<\/em> in Africa?\u201d<\/a> &#8211; a webinar exploring potential strategies to control this invasive mosquito species, with a focus on genetic approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c16ea16f491d9f47703f7cc5f40af44b\"><strong>Policy milestones <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2024 was marked by major policy milestones: the twenty-sixth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-26) and the&nbsp;Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/conferences\/2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COP 16<\/a>). In May, Members of the Network joined delegates from around the world in Nairobi at SBSTTA-26 to review topics of interest such as synthetic biology, risk assessment, the Global Biodiversity and Health Action Plan, and indicators of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). CBD members adopted new and voluntary guidance to assess living modified organisms containing gene drives and decided to develop a `capacity-building action plan to help countries research, use and benefit from synthetic biology. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandconservation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Island Conservation<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewild.org\/\">Re:w<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewild.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">i<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewild.org\/\">ld<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/addressing-the-impact-of-vector-borne-diseases-on-biodiversity-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">co-hosted a panel<\/a>&nbsp;showcasing how innovative approaches could be leveraged to address the impact of vector-borne diseases on biodiversity and health. Representatives from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/conservationxlabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Conservation X Labs<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Target Malaria<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.izw-berlin.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalitionforconservationgenetics.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Coalition for Conservation Genetics<\/a>, and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanbi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SANBI<\/a>), also participated in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/considering-opportunities-of-new-tools-for-conservation-at-cop-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">panel discussion<\/a> exploring how new tools can complement existing conservation efforts, help protect biodiversity and achieve sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2024 was an eventful year for the Network filled with progress and innovation.
