As we enter 2024, we take a moment to look back and celebrate the highlights of the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The year began with two inaugurations: both the University of California Malaria Initiative (<a href=\"https:\/\/stopmalaria.org\/\">UCMI<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/\">Target Malaria<\/a> inaugurated state-of-the-art insectaries and laboratory spaces. UCMI <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/ucmi-inaugurates-new-laboratory-and-insectary-in-sao-tome-and-principe-advancing-capacity-for-co-development-of-gene-drive-technology\/\">completed the development<\/a> of a new insectary and molecular biology laboratory at the University of S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe (STP), to further their mission to contribute to the elimination of malaria. Target Malaria completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/targetmalaria.org\/target-malaria-completes-a-new-insectary-in-ghana\/\">new\u202finsectary<\/a>\u202fand laboratory space at the University of Ghana to enhance infrastructure for mosquito research according to internationally recognized practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Twitter-instream-resizedforblog.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Twitter-instream-resizedforblog.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Twitter-instream-resizedforblog-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>2023 was also marked by scientific breakthroughs and advancements. Researchers at the Ifakara Health Institute (<a href=\"https:\/\/ihi.or.tz\/\">IHI<\/a>) and partners part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transmissionzero.org\/\">Transmission Zero<\/a> global malaria research programme developed the <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/transmission-zero-develops-first-transgenic-mosquito-strain-to-be-made-in-africa\/\">first transgenic mosquito strain<\/a> to be made in Africa, demonstrating the successful development of local technical capacity and infrastructure to generate new genetic technologies which could contribute to the fight against malaria. Researchers from UCMI also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2221118120\">made <\/a>a significant advancement in the development of new malaria control tools by demonstrating the ability of a dual effector gene drive construct to reduce the prevalence of malaria in caged populations of <em>Anopheles gambiae<\/em> and <em>Anopheles coluzzii<\/em> mosquitoes. Strides were also made in enhancing the efficiency of gene drive systems in <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquitoes, a major vector of dengue and yellow fever. Researchers at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.akbarilab.com\/\">The Akbari Lab<\/a> in collaboration with researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/uci.edu\/\">UC Irvine<\/a> proposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plospathogens\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.ppat.1010842\">novel CRISPR-based approach<\/a> to modify <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquitoes, while researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlpheyLab?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">Alphey Lab<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/\">University of York<\/a> and colleagues from the University of Oxford <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-36029-7\">explored alternative pathways<\/a> for efficient gene editing in these mosquitoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"544\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1984\" src=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Ifakara_-_larva_of_the_transgenic_mosquito_through_the_lens_of_a_microscope_in_IHI-fc8.png\"> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-37cdc0656356caa9c6d6b28bf6490227\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-color\">A transgenic mosquito larva through the lens of a microscope at the Ifakara Health Institute. Photograph: Ifakara Health Institute<\/mark><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-37483-z\">paper<\/a> co-authored by Omar Akbari, The Akbari Lab, highlighted the value of using the term &#8220;gene drive\u201d to describe both natural and synthetic genetic elements that promote their own transmission. In August, researchers from Target Malaria <a href=\"https:\/\/malariajournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12936-023-04665-5\">assessed<\/a> the potential toxicity and allergenicity of a CRISPR-Cas9 gene drive for malaria control and found that releasing the gene drive into the environment should not pose increased risks to humans or animals. In September, researchers from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lstmed.ac.uk\/\">LSTM<\/a>) looked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/crispr.2023.0029\">at how CRISPR-Cas9 gene drives cope with genetic differences<\/a> in Anopheles mosquitoes and demonstrated that gene drives can be applied effectively to diverse wild mosquito populations. The campaigns allowed to foreground the importance of finding new tools to control malaria and showcase the valuable work carried out by researchers across member and partner institutions to develop new tools to fight vector-borne diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the field of biodiversity conservation, the end of the year saw the release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/ias\">Thematic Assessment Report on Invasive Alien Species and their Control <\/a>by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/\">IPBES<\/a>, which examines the magnitude of the threat posed by invasive alien species (IAS). The report showed that IAS have been a major factor in 60% of recorded global animal and plant extinctions and that the negative impacts of IAS are likely to continue rising in the future. The Network organized a <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/new-developments-in-policy-and-governance-of-gene-drive-technologies\/\">parallel session<\/a> de l\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/isbr.info\/symposium\">16th ISBR Symposium<\/a>, St. Louis, Missouri, on new developments in policy and governance of gene drives. The Network also hosted its second Policy Engagement Workshop at the <a href=\"https:\/\/conference2023.pamca.org\/\">2023 PAMCA Annual Conference<\/a> in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, aimed at empowering young African scientists working in the vector control space to become effective advocates for their research. These meetings allowed researchers to showcase their work and explore a variety of topics related to gene drive research, such as stakeholder engagement for health and conservation and innovative approaches for malaria control. The Network also organized a side event on the margins of the third International Conference on Public Health in Africa (<a href=\"https:\/\/cphia2023.com\/\">CPHIA 2023<\/a>) in Lusaka, Zambia, on how novel genetic approaches could be applied to achieve the African Union\u2019s goal of eliminating malaria from the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for online events, IHI hosted many masterclasses throughout 2023, including on the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_5qkftXuuUE\">Gene Drives for Malaria Elimination<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zksZwMH4wsQ\">invasion and control of the invasive <em>Anopheles stephensi<\/em> mosquito in Africa<\/a>. The Network and the Pan-African Mosquito Control Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pamca.org\/\">PAMCA<\/a>) hosted two webinars on the basics of gene drive technologies and their applications for conservation and public health. The next one in the series will take place in March and will examine regulatory and governance considerations for gene drive research. For World Mosquito Day, the Network, in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (<a href=\"https:\/\/emergingag.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=cc4b0b1b53c39ca4c317c3c44&amp;id=bb6a3b1057&amp;e=c128a20532\">APLMA<\/a>) and the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network (<a href=\"https:\/\/emergingag.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=cc4b0b1b53c39ca4c317c3c44&amp;id=e46e6504bd&amp;e=c128a20532\">APMEN<\/a>) organized a <a href=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/fr\/blog\/genetic-interventions-to-combat-obstinate-mosquito-borne-scourges\/\">webinar<\/a> focused on novel genetic approaches to combat mosquito-borne diseases. Key developments included the start of open-ended online forums and submissions focused on synthetic biology and risk assessment of living modified organisms, which fostered informative discussions about critical topics for gene drive research.
