The webinar brought together experts, national programme representatives, researchers, implementers and public health professionals to examine how emerging tools and partnerships can strengthen the future of malaria and mosquito-borne disease control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"wpex-responsive-media\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"World Mosquito Day 2026 &quot;What is the Future of Mosquito Vector Control?&quot; | APMEN TechTalks\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LICHbVTIhcA?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The response demonstrated the scale of global interest in this topic. The webinar received&nbsp;<strong>1,458 registrations from 102 countries across all continents<\/strong>, with&nbsp;<strong>669 participants from 80 countries<\/strong>&nbsp;joining the live session. While APMEN remains a country-led regional network focused on malaria elimination in Asia and the Pacific, the breadth of participation showed that its technical platforms are increasingly relevant to professionals and partners working across the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The audience reflected the diverse community needed to address malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. Registrants included representatives from government agencies, academic and research institutions, non-governmental organisations, the private sector, UN agencies and donor organisations. Government agencies formed the largest group of registrants, followed by universities, research institutions and non-governmental organisations. This diversity made the webinar a valuable space for national programmes, scientists, practitioners, partners and innovators to exchange perspectives across disciplines and geographical boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking beyond the current vector control toolbox<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the Opening session of webinar,&nbsp;<strong>Dr Muhammad Mukhtar<\/strong>, Director of Pakistan\u2019s Directorate of Malaria Control and Chair of the APMEN Vector Control Working Group, highlighted the need to consider new tools and approaches that can complement existing interventions and respond to persistent challenges, including insecticide resistance, outdoor transmission and changing mosquito behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prof Leo Braack<\/strong>, Senior Vector Control Specialist at Malaria Consortium and Co-Chair of the APMEN Vector Control Working Group, moderated the webinar and also provided an overview of the current vector control landscape and the historic trends in use of different vector control tools. Among other facts he noted that insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying have delivered major gains in recent decades, but their predominantly indoor focus leaves important gaps, particularly where mosquitoes bite outdoors or when people are not protected by bed nets; he also noted that development of insecticide resistance has been the single biggest reason why malaria burden reduction has reached a plateau since 2015. He emphasised the need for stronger entomological capacity, better understanding of local transmission patterns and more locally relevant solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The webinar then explored several promising approaches that could help address these gaps and shape the next generation of mosquito vector control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/WMD-APMEN-webinar-2026-1080x1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4981\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/WMD-APMEN-webinar-2026-1080x1080.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/WMD-APMEN-webinar-2026-720x720.jpg 720w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/WMD-APMEN-webinar-2026-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/WMD-APMEN-webinar-2026-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/WMD-APMEN-webinar-2026-12x12.jpg 12w, https:\/\/genedrivenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/WMD-APMEN-webinar-2026.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prof Neil Lobo<\/strong>&nbsp;of the University of Notre Dame introduced&nbsp;<strong>spatial emanators<\/strong>, a new class of vector control products that passively release volatile chemicals to reduce mosquito density and protect indoor spaces. He explained that these tools could complement bed nets and indoor residual spraying, while noting that further evidence is still needed on outdoor use, standalone effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. His presentation reinforced the importance of combining tools with targeted surveillance rather than relying on a single interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prof Carlos Chaccour<\/strong>&nbsp;of the University of Navarra examined&nbsp;<strong>endectocides<\/strong>, particularly ivermectin, as an opportunity to expand vector control through a One Health approach. By making the blood of treated people or domestic stock toxic to mosquitoes, ivermectin can target vectors that continue to transmit malaria despite existing interventions. He highlighted findings from the BOHEMIA trial in Kenya, which demonstrated a 26 percent reduction in malaria incidence on top of high bed-net coverage, while also discussing opportunities to treat livestock and develop longer-lasting formulations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prof Jackson Champer<\/strong>&nbsp;of Peking University discussed&nbsp;<strong>gene drive technology<\/strong>&nbsp;and its potential to&nbsp;control malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. Using CRISPR-Cas9, gene drive technology can bias inheritance and spread engineered traits through mosquito populations, creating possibilities for population modification or suppression. At the same time, he highlighted&nbsp;considerations around ongoing research to develop gene drive technologies and their potential future evaluation in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prof Claudia Surjadjaja&nbsp;<\/strong>of the World Mosquito Program shared lessons from&nbsp;<strong>Wolbachia<\/strong>, a naturally occurring bacterium that can reduce the ability of&nbsp;<em>Aedes aegypti<\/em>&nbsp;mosquitoes to transmit diseases such as dengue. She highlighted experience from programmes now active across 16 countries and underscored a critical lesson for innovation: scientific evidence is only one part of success. Regulation, financing, production capacity and community ownership are equally important for implementation at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From promising technologies to practical solutions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presentations moved beyond individual technologies to a broader question:&nbsp;<strong>who will build the future of vector control?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his concluding presentation,&nbsp;<strong>Dr Muhammad Mukhtar<\/strong>&nbsp;proposed a three-actor partnership model in which national programmes define unmet needs, academia generates evidence and industry delivers innovation. He stressed that current tools remain largely focused on indoor transmission, while important gaps persist outdoors and during early evening transmission. Building partnerships now will be essential if future vector control innovations are to reach the communities that need them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This message resonated throughout the&nbsp;<strong>Q&amp;A session<\/strong>. Participants raised more than 100 practical questions on cost-effectiveness, insecticide resistance, environmental and ecological considerations, implementation, surveillance, financing, community engagement and the continued role of existing approaches such as larval source management. The discussion reflected a strong shared interest in how new tools can move responsibly from research and trials into practical public health use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the clearest themes was that innovation should not mean abandoning proven interventions. Existing tools such as insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying remain essential, but they are no longer sufficient on their own to address an evolving malaria transmission landscape. The future of vector control will require intelligent combinations of existing and emerging tools, guided by local evidence, surveillance, cost-effectiveness, implementation capacity and community engagement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A global community connected through APMEN TechTalks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strong participation in this World Mosquito Day webinar illustrates the growing role of&nbsp;<strong>APMEN TechTalks as a platform for technical exchange across regions<\/strong>. Registrants included 679 individuals from Africa, 617 from Asia, and 162 from the Australia and Oceania, Europe, North America and South America. The live audience similarly spanned six continents, with 669 attendees from 80 countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Audience engagement remained strong throughout the session. In a live poll,&nbsp;<strong>96.7 percent of respondents rated the webinar\u2019s usefulness as \u201cExcellent\u201d or \u201cGood,\u201d 91.8 percent rated the overall quality as \u201cExcellent\u201d or \u201cGood,\u201d and 99.5 percent said they would attend a future APMEN webinar<\/strong>. These results underscore the value of accessible, high-quality technical exchange that connects experts and practitioners across countries, regions and disciplines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The webinar also reaffirmed APMEN\u2019s role as a bridge between evidence, policy and practice. Although APMEN is rooted in the Asia-Pacific region, its knowledge-sharing platforms are increasingly serving a broader global audience seeking practical learning on malaria elimination, vector control and health security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On World Mosquito Day, the message from this global conversation was clear:&nbsp;<strong>the future of vector control will not depend on a single technology alone.
