Today the World Health Organization published its annual World Malaria Report<\/a>. New data shows that countries around the world largely held the line against further setbacks to malaria prevention, testing and treatment services in 2021. Nevertheless, the report confirms that malaria remains a deadly threat to millions of people globally and that the fight against the disease is still at a precarious juncture.<\/p>\n

There were an estimated 619,000 malaria deaths globally in 2021 compared to 625,000 in 2020 and 568, 000 in 2019. Malaria cases continued to rise between 2020 and 2021, but at a slower rate than in the period 2019 to 2020, with the global tally of malaria cases reaching 247 million last year.<\/p>\n

Although efforts made by malaria-endemic countries to avoid disruption to malaria services during the COVID-19 pandemic undoubtedly averted rebounds, the malaria burden in Africa remains unacceptably high. The African region continues to carry the heaviest malaria burden<\/strong>, with 234 million cases and 593,000 deaths in 2021. Four African countries accounted for nearly half of all malaria cases globally \u2013 Nigeria (26.6%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12.3%), Uganda<\/a> (5.1%) and Mozambique (4.1%). Additionally, Burkina Faso<\/a> accounted for 3.3%, Mali<\/a> for 3.1% and Ghana<\/a> for 2.2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u201cDespite progress, the African region continues to be hardest hit by this deadly disease,\u201d <\/em>said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. \u201cNew tools\u2014and the funding to deploy these\u2014are urgently needed to help us defeat malaria<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n
