El coste humano y econ\u00f3mico de estas enfermedades es tremendo: se calcula que s\u00f3lo la malaria cuesta a los pa\u00edses africanos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/malaria\/malaria_worldwide\/impact.html\">12.000 millones de<\/a> d\u00f3lares al a\u00f1o. Aunque las herramientas existentes para controlar las enfermedades transmitidas por vectores han ayudado a salvar millones de vidas, no han conseguido eliminarlas. Se necesitan nuevos enfoques para abordar problemas como los de la creciente resistencia a los insecticidas y a los medicamentos.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->En el caso de una enfermedad como la malaria, podr\u00eda introducirse un sistema de impulso gen\u00e9tico en una especie de mosquito para reducir su capacidad de transmitir la enfermedad o la poblaci\u00f3n de mosquitos transmisores de la malaria. Aunque faltan varios a\u00f1os para que cualquier aplicaci\u00f3n del impulso gen\u00e9tico est\u00e9 lista para su uso, alg\u00fan d\u00eda podr\u00eda complementar los enfoques existentes para el control de la malaria. Dado que se heredar\u00eda a lo largo de sucesivas generaciones de mosquitos, un sistema de impulso gen\u00e9tico podr\u00eda ser una estrategia de control de la malaria rentable y sostenible que requiriese inversiones repetidas limitadas, sobre todo en comunidades donde las herramientas existentes pueden resultar costosas y dif\u00edciles de aplicar. Las especies invasoras son la segunda causa de p\u00e9rdida de especies vegetales y animales en el mundo. El coste econ\u00f3mico mundial de las especies ex\u00f3ticas invasoras super\u00f3 los <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/IASmediarelease\">423.000 millones de d\u00f3lares<\/a> anuales en 2019, y los costes se han cuadruplicado al menos cada d\u00e9cada desde 1970. Las EEI en las islas han sido un foco de la investigaci\u00f3n sobre el impulso gen\u00e9tico porque las islas se ven particularmente afectadas, ya que representan la mayor concentraci\u00f3n tanto de biodiversidad como de extinci\u00f3n de especies. Las comunidades, plantas y animales de las islas se ven muy afectados por los roedores invasores, que han invadido <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geneticbiocontrol.org\/\">casi el 90%<\/a> de las islas del mundo y son una de las principales causas de extinci\u00f3n en estos ecosistemas.<\/p>\n<p>En la actualidad, los rodenticidas son la mejor herramienta de que disponen los conservacionistas para eliminar los roedores en las islas. Aunque muy eficaces, estas operaciones son complicadas y costosas de aplicar y est\u00e1n limitadas por las dificultades de acceso a zonas remotas y los impactos negativos sobre especies no objetivo. Los m\u00e9todos de modificaci\u00f2n gen\u00e9tica ofrecen una alternativa a los rodenticidas que puede ser sostenible, rentable, espec\u00edfica para cada especie y m\u00e1s humana.
